What’s the difference between an “Air Circulator” and a “Fan?”
While ordinary or commodity “fans” move air, they simply lack the aerodynamics to circulate air. Specifically, fans have a wide dispersion pattern with no room penetration. Because of this, you must have the fan blowing on you in order to derive comfort.
Vornado Air Circulators are highly efficient air moving devices that make ordinary fans obsolete. The system includes a unique combination of aerodynamic elements (Inlet air accelerator or flow straightener, deep-pitch propeller, blade duct and AirTensity™ grill). The combination of elements results in a room penetrating vortex or “beam” of air. We call this Vornado Vortex Action. Vortex Action excites all the air in the room into complete and continuous motion. This excitation enlivens room air and delivers comfort to all room occupants anywhere in the room.
What’s more, the ability of a Vornado Air Circulator to move air over long distances affords you a variety of uses including air exchange between rooms, up the stairs or down the hall. No ordinary fan delivers comfort like a Vornado Air Circulator.
How is the new Vornado Air Circulator I own different from the old Vornadofan® my parents owned?
Although both are based on the same basic aerodynamic elements, the new Vornado Air Circulators are actually more efficient air movers. Beginning with the introduction of our first Vornado Air Circulator in 1989 and, more recently with the introduction of the 500, 600 and 700 Series Circulators, we improved output through the fan head by tweaking elements of the system. The result is astounding performance from devices that are considered “small” by some people and considerably more efficient than the original Vornadofan of the 1940s and ‘50s.
Additionally, the grill design of the new Vornado meets today’s finger probe and related safety requirements. Finally, today’s Vornado is considerably more rugged and attractively styled.
So, how do I best utilize my Vornado Air Circulator in summer?
In summer, we recommend running the unit on “High” and aiming the beam of air so that it hits a wall across the room roughly halfway up. This will allow for the establishment of a high speed circulation pattern in the room.
Here’s a helpful hint: Always make certain the vortex travels across the room unobstructed. This is required for proper circulation.
I have air conditioning. How does moving air with a Vornado Air Circulator make you feel cooler and save money?
It has been shown that circulating air raises your threshold of discomfort. That means if you’re comfortable at a 72-degree thermostat setting with NO air moving, you can enjoy the same level of comfort at a higher thermostat setting, say 77-degrees. That 5-degree increase of the thermostat can translate into as much as a 10% savings on your electric bill. (Energy savings vary by part of the country. Savings estimates are provided by the Department of Energy.)
You speak of year-round use. Why and how do I use a Vornado Air Circulator in winter?
Why? To better utilize available heat in the room. As you know, hot air rises and cool air falls. Without air circulation, heat is simply trapped at the ceiling and, therefore, wasted.
How? Select a low-speed setting and point the adjustable fan head toward the ceiling. This forces the hot air off the ceiling and mixes it with the cooler air near the floor resulting in an even distribution of heat throughout the entire room. This can save you money.
Is there any advantage to having more than one Vornado Air Circulator operating in a single room?
It depends on the size and shape of the room as well as how you direct the airflow. In larger rooms, a second Vornado Air Circulator can provide additional comfort as long as the Vornados are not pointed directly at each other effectively canceling one other.
I have ceiling fans. Can I use a Vornado Air Circulator too?
Certainly, but you may need to experiment as the strong downdraft of the ceiling fan may create enough of a disturbance in the room as to minimize or negate the benefits of the Vornado Air Circulator. Interestingly, we have had a number of consumers tell us they quit using their ceiling fans because the circulation and comfort delivered by Vornado is gentler and more complete.
We spend as much of the summer season as possible outside on our patio. Although we have a canopy over it, there aren’t any walls. Would a Vornado Air Circulator help keep us comfortable?
Yes, but the Vornado Air Circulator must blow directly on you since the space is not enclosed and, therefore, prohibits circulation. However, please remember that Vornado products are not recommended, nor are they listed with UL, for outdoor use.
Do I need to oil the motor in my Vornado Air Circulator?
Your Vornado Air Circulator’s motor will NEVER need oiling as it is permanently lubricated. Adding oil, especially the wrong kind of oil, can ruin the motor.
How do I remove the grill for my 533, 633, or 753 Circulator?
Remove the 3 screws (indicated in pink) located in between the ribs of the inlet grill at roughly 10, 2 and 6 o’clock positions. (Do not remove the 2 screws on the pivot arms.) Place the circulator so that is facing you. Position your hands at the 10 and 2 o’clock positions- lift up and back on the outer grill to release the gril clips. Repeat the process against the remaining two clips. Replace by lining up the clips with the holes and firmly snapping the grill back into place. Replace the screws.
Are Vornado Air Circulators really designed in Andover, Kansas?
Absolutely. Design and engineering, as well as some manufacturing functions, are performed in-house at Vornado’s 285,000 square-foot headquarters in Andover, Kansas – and have been since 1989, when Vornado Air Circulation Systems launched its first whole-room air circulator. The Vornado line has now expanded to encompass more than 120 models across five distinct comfort categories including air circulators, whole room air purifiers, whole room heaters, whole room humidifiers and oscillating fans – all bearing the Vornado brand, the most trusted brand in air comfort for more than 75 years.
How would I go about changing the fuse in my cord?
Please see the visual aid and instructions below.
How do I change the temperature display from Celsius to Fahrenheit?
On AVH10, AVH30, VMH500, and VMH600 heaters, select between Fahrenheit and Celsius temperature reading by holding down the “+” button and the mode button at the same time.
On TAVH10 heater, select between Fahrenheit and Celsius temperature reading by holding down the “-” button and the timer button at the same time.
On AVH2 Plus and IR400 heaters, select between Fahrenheit and Celsius temperature reading by holding down the “-” button and the “+” button at the same time.
What's the difference between the Vornado VH10 and AVH10?
The primary difference is in the type of controls the units use. Model VH10 has a thermostat with mechanical controls. When the room reaches set temperature, the heat and fan on the heater will shut off. When room temperature drops below set temperature, the fan and heat will turn back on to raise the room temperature back up. The unit offers a selection of 1500 watts on “High” or 750 watts on “Low”. Safety features on the VH10 include a “cool-touch” case, 2-stage auto shut-off, tight grill spirals and tipover protection. It also has integrated cord storage.
Model AVH10 has electronic push-button controls with digital display and features a thermistor, a sophisticated sensor that allows the unit to self-adjust the heat output to maintain the desired temperature. Featuring exclusive Automatic Climate Control, upon reaching set temperature, the unit automatically adjusts (lowers) the heat element’s wattage and fan speed to maintain the set temperature. If room temperature reaches 3 degrees above set temperature, the heat element and fan shut off to avoid blowing cold air. Lower wattage and fan speed means “just the right amount” of energy used and nothing is wasted – truly efficient. This eliminates annoying hot and cold cycles. When the room cools off, the unit automatically adjusts to increase the heat and fan speed to maintain the set temperature.
The unit offers a selection of 1500 watts on “High” or 750 watts on “Low” as well as a Fan Only setting for year-round use. The AVH10 also features a “cool-touch” case, 2-stage auto shut-off, tight grill spirals and tipover protection. It also has integrated cord storage.
How large of an area can I keep warm with my Vornado heater?
Because they not only heat the air but also circulate it, Vornado heaters are more “comfort-efficient” than other comparably sized space heaters. While it’s very difficult to quote a particular room size, we can tell you that a Vornado will effectively warm just about any room in an average home. Note: Vornado heaters are not intended for use in bathrooms or similar wet environments. Never place a heater where it may fall into a bathtub, swimming pool or other water container or on any wet surface
I work in a cold office. Is it safe to put my Vornado heater under my desk?
It’s okay to run your Vornado heater under a desk as long as you don’t block the airflow path. If the airflow is blocked, the auto shut-off safety feature will cut power to the heater to prevent overheating.
How much energy does a Vornado heater consume?
At their highest setting, our heaters use a maximum 1500 watts of electricity, drawing 12.5 amps. On the lowest setting, the maximum is 750 watts, drawing 6.25 amps.
The exception to this are models VH202 & VMH10 (750 watts High / 375 watts Low) & SRTH (900 watts High / 450 watts Low).
Assuming an average cost of .10/kilowatt hour of electricity, a Vornado or any other 1500-watt electric heater will cost around .15/hour of operation.
We have young children running around our house. Is it safe to use the unit when they're around?
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A “CHILD SAFE” OR “CHILD PROOF” HEATER OR ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE. Vornado heaters have been designed with a number of special safety features including a “cool-touch” case, 2-stage auto shut-off, tight grill spirals and tipover protection. In fact, our units are perhaps among the most “safety-focused” products in their category. But just like a toaster, iron, hair dryer, etc., electric heaters are high wattage appliances. Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the heater. Caution is necessary when any heater is used by or near children or people who may be incapacitated whenever the heater is left operating and unattended.
What is the best method for cleaning my Vornado heater?
Proper and regular cleaning of each Vornado heater is essential to the safe use and performance of the product. Cleaning the outside of the heater is recommended on a weekly basis. Unplug heater before cleaning. We recommend using the brush attachment on a household vacuum cleaner to vacuum any accumulated dust off the open grills on the front, back and/or the sides of heater. Wipe down the entire heater with a soft, dry cloth.
We also recommend periodically blowing out the heater with pressurized air. This helps keep the heat element and motor clear of dust, hair and debris that can build up inside the heater as it moves air during use. Keeping the heater clean from dust, hair and debris can also help eliminate unwanted odors caused by accumulation of these particles inside the unit.

Why humidify the air?
For both health and comfort reasons. Physicians have long-recommended humidification to help relieve nasal and chest congestion for infants, children and adults. Humidification also helps with dry skin. A humidifier can also minimize annoying static and provide your furniture with much needed moisture.
Why humidify with Vornado?
First, the Vortex Action of Vornado Humidifiers effectively distributes moisture and recovers heat throughout an entire room. Second, the evaporative style system is clean running, delivering moisture the same way Mother Nature does. Finally, Vornado offers easy-to-use, hassle-free designs that include easy-fill, no-spill, leak-free water tanks. It also operates very, very quietly in comparison to competitive models.
You say Vornado's Humidifier is an evaporative type. What does that mean? Are there other ways to humidify?
It means that water is dispensed from a storage vessel into a chamber where the water is drawn up into a cellulose wick. A fan pulls air through the wick evaporating the water into an invisible vapor that is dispersed into the room. Yes, there are other ways to humidify. In addition to evaporative, there are vaporizers or steam humidifiers that boil water to moisturize the air. There are also cool or warm mist devices that atomize the water by way of impellers or ultrasonic transducers.
I have my evaporative Vornado Humidifier turned on, but I don’t see any moisture coming out of the top. Is my unit working?
If you have adequate amount of water in the tank and the set humidity level has not been reached, most likely your unit is working fine. With evaporative humidifiers you will not see moisture coming from the unit like you would other humidifiers.
How much area or space will my new Vornado humidify?
Vornado offers several sizes of humidifiers. Each model is designed with a different water tank capacity, output and square footage coverage. You will need to determine what size and use of the space you are buying for. For example the EVAP2 covers up to 600 sq. ft. and EVAP3 covers up to 700 sq. ft. and Ultra1 covers up to 900 sq. ft. More detailed specifications for all Vornado humidifiers are outlined on each product page of our website.
I have a whole house humidifier on my furnace. Why do I need a room humidifier?
Depending on the outside air temperature in winter, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recommends humidity levels between 30% and 60%. Most houses are “leaky” enough as to prohibit whole house humidifiers from achieving the recommended levels, hence the need for supplemental room humidification.
Is it okay to run the unit 24 hours a day?
Yes, Vornado Humidifiers are designed to run continuously. In fact, continuous operation is not only healthier for your environment, it is better for the humidifier. Allowing the unit to continue running after the water supply runs out allows the wicks to dry out, reducing the chance for mold or mildew to grow. Keep in mind, continuous operation requires that the bottles be filled every 24 to 48 hours.
How can I tell how much humidity my humidifier is producing?
The best way is to use a hygrometer, an instrument that measures the humidity level in a given area. A simple hygrometer can be purchased at most hardware stores for around $3 to $4. Another, albeit less accurate, way of judging the humidity level is to check to see if your windows are fogging with condensation. If so, humidity levels may be excessively high.
How much care and maintenance does a Vornado Humidifier require?
Because of its clean-running design, a Vornado Humidifier requires less care and cleaning than many humidifiers. Proper cleaning is essential to the air quality and performance of your humidifier. The frequency in which your humidifier will need to be cleaned will vary depending on use, water hardness and outside environmental factors. It is recommended, assuming average use, to thoroughly clean the unit several times throughout the season, or when mineral deposits or other particles begin to form. If the humidifier is turned Off with water in the base and not turned back on for eight hours or longer, or if the humidifier is not cleaned as recommended, you may experience some growth of algae or bacteria.
To clean the base, wash with warm water and a mild detergent. Rinse and dry. In the event you want to disinfect the base, mix solution of 1 teaspoon of chlorine bleach and 1 gallon water. Fill base with solution and wet all surfaces. The remaining solution can be discarded. Let stand 20 minutes and then empty. Rinse base with cool water until bleach smell is gone. Dry with clean cloth or paper towel.
On occasion the water tank may need to be wiped down or cleaned to remove build-up of impurities with a mild detergent and cool water. You may clean the grill or blades of the humidifier with a soft cloth or with a can of compressed air. You may also wipe down the entire surface of the humidifier with a soft cloth.
Do not use gasoline, thinners, solvents or other chemicals for cleaning. Humidifier components are not dishwasher safe. Do not submerge humidifier tops in water.
In addition, the wicks used in Vornado Humidifiers are disposable, which save you time and energy. All you have to do is toss the used wick and replace it with a new one – it’s that easy!
The wicks on my humidifier are getting discolored, hard and crusty at the top. Is this normal?
Yes, it’s normal. As the wicks evaporate water, minerals and other impurities are left behind. Unfortunately, that mineral build-up also makes your wicks less efficient at evaporating water. If your wicks still appear to be absorbing at least halfway up from the bottom, you can clean them. If they are no longer absorbing and there is no humidification action from your humidifier, it’s time to replace the wicks. Replacement wicks can be ordered from our website.
My wicks smell funny. What can I do?
On first use, the wicks may give off a mild odor. The odor is not harmful and will go away after the first few hours of operation. If the odor is exceptionally strong, you can help eliminate most or all of it by soaking the wick in a solution of 2 teaspoons of white vinegar and one gallon of water for 20–30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly in cool water. Allow excess water to run off and dry before replacing in the humidifier. DO NOT WRING OR TWIST.
How often do you need to change the wicks?
While your humidifier came equipped with a wick, you will eventually have to replace it, as they last approximately 4–8 weeks, depending on use. Many factors affect the life of the wicks, including amount of use, water hardness and outside environmental factors. The additional sodium in chemically softened water may also cause wicks to harden. Try using untreated or tap water. Hard water or water with excessive minerals, such as lime or iron, may shorten wick life. Try Bacteriostat or Water Treatment found at most hardware or home specialty stores or clean the wick.
You will know the wick needs to be replaced when it becomes hard and is no longer absorbing the water. Replace with a genuine Vornado wick. While other brands may fit our units, these wicks do not carry the same quality and life as our own and may diminish the humidifier’s performance.
Will my local retailer have replacement wicks for my Vornado Humidifier?
Generally, the retailer where you purchased your Vornado Humidifier should carry replacement wicks during the fall and winter, the primary seasons for humidification. We can’t guarantee your retailer will carry the wicks all year. Replacements wicks are just a toll-free phone call away. Call Vornado Consumer Service at (800)234-0604. Or you can order replacement wicks online.
Can I use a wick not made by Vornado in a Vornado Humidifier?
While other brands may fit our units, these wicks do not carry the same quality and life as our own and may diminish the humidifier’s performance. All of our products’ performance specifications are built around the use of Vornado wicks and accessories.
What are these wicks made of?
Humidifier wicks are made of cellulose fiber, a paper-like material, and are held together with a melted plastic layer. They are safe to dispose of in household refuse.
How does the Vornado ultrasonic humidifier work?
Ultrasonic technology shatters water into a fine, visible mist that is circulated throughout the room using Vortex Action. It includes a mineral cartridge that removes minerals from the water, thereby softening the water and reducing harmful mineral buildup on the transducer.
Why does the fan stay on when there is no mist coming out of the Ultrasonic Humidifier?
The unit will operate until the desired humidity level is reached, and at this point, the mist will turn Off. The unit is then designed to have the fan run continuously to keep all of the air circulating in the room.
How do I purchase a replacement mineral cartridge?
Generally, the retailer where you purchased your Vornado Humidifier should carry replacement mineral cartridges. You may also call Vornado Consumer Service at (800)234-0604 to purchase.
Do Element Steam Humidifiers require a wick or mineral cartridge?
No, Element does not require any type of filter, wick or cartridge.
What are Element's attention codes?
LC: Unit is locked and settings can’t be changed. See HOW TO USE – CONTROL LOCK.
A1: Power head is not attached to the base; does not have proper power connection. See HOW TO USE – ATTENTION CODES.
CH: When the water tank runs out of water, “CH” code will flash on the control panel until the tank is refilled. Once water is added, “CH” code clears and unit continues normal operation. See HOW TO USE – ATTENTION CODES.
CL: When the heat element has accumulated mineral scale and cleaning is needed, “CL” code will flash on the control panel until cleaned. Once clean, “CL” code will clear. See HOW TO USE – ATTENTION CODES.
Condensation is forming on the scent cup and outlet grill. Is this normal?
This is normal. As steam rises condensation may gather on these areas. You may wipe away periodically. It will not harm the unit.
How does the aromatherapy scent cup work?
Element is aromatherapy ready; just add your favorite essential oils. The steam will heat the oil and the fragrances will be released via evaporation ensuring the therapeutic properties are not damaged or altered. Follow the essential oils usage instructions as directed.
Do not overfill the scent cup or put any oils directly into the water tank, outlet grill, area under the scent cup, or base. Avoid transferring oils to the control panel or ring around the outlet grill as decolorization or a reaction to the surface may occur.
How often should I clean my Element Steam Humidifier?
The best way to minimize mineral build-up is to use distilled or de-mineralized water when using your Element Steam Humidifier. It is recommended the heat element and silicone parts be cleaned weekly or when Attention Code “CL” appears on control panel in order to remove any deposits that form. This will help to extend the life of the product and keep it functioning at its maximum potential.
How do I clean the silicone parts (heat element cover, reservoir & boil chamber)?
Clean the silicone parts with warm water and a mild detergent or you may soak in vinegar. Rinse and dry. The silicone parts are also dishwasher safe (place on the top rack of dishwasher only).
How do I clean the heat element?
Do not use hard brushes, steel wool or other abrasives on heat element to avoid damage.
REMOVE MINERAL BUILD-UP
The Element Steam Humidifier includes a packet of Vornado Cleaner & Descaler. Consisting of citric acid, this agent is used to loosen and remove mineral build-up on the heat element. It is easy-to-use and safe for all Vornado Steam Humidifiers.
1. Turn off humidifier, unplug and let cool before cleaning. Do not run unit at any time during the cleaning process. Disassemble humidifier as outlined in CLEANING section of the Owner’s Guide.
2. Empty any water in base and silicone boil chamber & reservoir.
3. Combine granules from the cleaning packet and mix with 6 oz. of water in a measuring cup (not included) until completely dissolved. Pour mixture into the silicone boil chamber and reservoir in base. If using more than 6 oz. of water, some will flow into the base. This will not hurt base but it is not needed.
4. Set power head on base and attach (without silicone heat element cover attached). This will submerge heat element directly into the mixture. Soak for 30 minutes to an hour or longer depending on amount of build-up. You may scrub the heat element with a soft bristle brush as particles begin to loosen. Avoid hard brushes or steel wool as they can damage the heat element.
5. Once clean, thoroughly rinse base, silicone parts and heat element with cool tap water to ensure all residue is gone before using.
NOTE: Undiluted white vinegar may also be used for cleaning the heat element, however, citric acid is recommended.
For replacement packets (MD1-0037), call Vornado Consumer Service at 800-234-0604.
Is it normal for the essential oils to stain the scent cup?
Depending on the unique chemical properties of the essential oil there may be a transfer of colorant from the oil to the cup. This will not hurt the cup or affect its performance. Use only the amount of essential oils as directed on the bottle. Clean the scent cup periodically even if you use the same essential oil repeatedly. If you are using multiple fragrances clean the scent cup between use.
How do I clean the aromatherapy scent cup?
Remove the scent cup and lid and clean with warm water and a mild detergent. Rinse and dry with clean cloth or paper towel.
When I plug in Element (but have not powered the humidifier on yet), the unit emits a slight buzzing.
This is normal. It is simply the power supply providing power to the unit. It is not a safety issue or defective in any way.
Why clean the air?
Primarily for health reasons. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that indoor air quality is 5x to 10x more polluted than the air outdoors and is a top environmental risk. The good news is – indoor air quality is a risk we can control.
The most effective way of maintaining good indoor air quality is to eliminate or reduce airborne particles that trigger allergic or asthmatic episodes. That’s where an air cleaner comes in…effectively removing many irritating particles such as dust, pollen, dust mite waste, pet dander, tobacco smoke, mold spores, bacteria, odors, candlewick soot and much more.
How do these pollutants become airborne?
Particle pollutants become airborne with typical household activity. Walking over carpet, opening windows/blinds, sitting on furniture, pets scratching, opening doors are just a few ways irritants can become airborne. The micron tiny size allows them to stay airborne for hours and increases the likelihood of these irritants landing in or on you.
Why clean the air with Vornado Air Purifiers?
Vornado Air Cleaners’ performance is certified by AHAM (see next question) and our air cleaners provide the right balance of key requirements. Vornado uses the most effective filter combination with a PreSorb® prefilter and a True HEPA primary filter. Signature Vortex Action circulates all the air in the room because if the air is not moving – it’s not being cleaned! There are many other features that make Vornado unique. They include an upward clean air outlet, top-mounted controls, low-maintenance (no blades to clean weekly), long life HEPA filter (2 to 4 years), and a distinctive sculptural shape that blends with any room.
Who is AHAM and what do they provide to the Air Purifier category?
The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) is an organization that certifies the testing results of home appliances such as room Air Purifiers, refrigerators, room air conditioners, humidifiers and dehumidifiers. Since 1967, they have used outside labs to test products, and today you’ll find AHAM certified ratings on a variety of appliances. This makes comparing products easier for you.
What certification does AHAM give to Air Purifiers?
This AHAM certified rating is called Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). The seal lists three CADR numbers – one for tobacco smoke, one for pollen and one for dust. The CADR indicates volume of filtered air delivered by an Air Purifier. The higher the tobacco smoke, pollen and dust numbers, the faster the unit filters the air.
What is True HEPA? What makes it so special?
HEPA stands for “High Efficiency Particulate Arrestor.” True HEPA refers to a high-efficiency class of HEPA filter media rated 99.97% efficient at 0.3 microns.
What makes True HEPA special is its high particle capture efficiency. True HEPA filtration has been used for many years in nuclear facilities, manufacturing clean rooms and medical facilities where clean air is absolutely required.
The American Lung Association refers to HEPA as the most efficient mechanical filters for removing small particles, which can be breathed deep into the lungs.
What does 99.97% efficient at 0.3 microns mean?
It means that 99.97% of the particles (as small as 0.3 microns) that enter the Vornado HEPA filter will be caught and removed from the air. Particles that are smaller than 0.3 microns often attach to larger particles making them easy to capture or they attach themselves to the fibers of the HEPA media. To envision the size, line up 100,000 particles 0.3 micron in size end-to-end and it will equal one inch. For comparison, a typical human hair crosscut is about 70 microns.
What is the HEPA filter made of and how does it work?
HEPA is a paper-like material made of densely spaced glass fibers. A powerful blower is need to pull air into the unit and through the filter. Allergens and particles are trapped in the dense fibers of the filter.
How often do the filters need to be changed?
We recommend changing the PreSorb® carbon filter every 3 months and the HEPA filter every 2 to 4 years depending on the specific home environment. Some home environment factors are whether or not you have pets indoors, have moderate or severe allergies or asthma, someone smokes, you burn a fireplace or candles or live in a dusty area.
How large of a room will Vornado Air Purifiers effectively clean?
The AQS15 is certified for rooms up to 226 sq. ft. in size (approximately 14’ x 16’). The AQS35 is certified for larger rooms up to 395 sq. ft. in size (approximately 20’ x 20’).
What is the purpose of the PreSorb® prefilter?
The PreSorb® prefilter adsorbs odors and is the first line of filtration catching the larger particles. It uses activated carbon to adsorb odors and other organic compounds. Activated carbon is the best adsorbent available to aid in the reduction of common household odors and organic compounds. Trapping the larger particles will extend the life of the HEPA filter.
What kind of odors does the PreSorb® prefilter remove?
The following list is provided by the manufacturer of our PreSorb® filters. These are the compounds that have a high adsorptive rating:
|
|
Can I vacuum or wash the filters?
It is not advised. Vacuuming the PreSorb® prefilter can remove the carbon from the material and reduce the odor adsorption effectiveness. The HEPA filter is delicate. (In fact, when changing the HEPA filter, you should avoid touching the pleated filter material. Just hold the filter by the frame.) Vacuuming can break the fibers inside and reduce its effectiveness by creating holes in the filter.
Our home has open areas where one room flows into the next (i.e., living-dining-kitchen). Will Vornado air cleaners work in this kind of space?
Yes, the unit will still clean effectively. A larger area means fewer air changes per hour, so the process will take longer than it would in a single room with four walls.
What are air changes per hour?
Air changes per hour (or ACH) is the number of times in one hour the entire volume of room air passes through the Air Purifier. Physicians generally recommend an ACH of 4 to 6. The CADR rates for Vornado Air Purifiers equate to 5 ACH.
In addition to using Vornado HEPA Air Purifiers, what else can I do to help reduce the allergen irritants in my home?
Here is a list of tips to help reduce the allergen irritants in your home:
- Wash bedding weekly in hot water.
- Dry on high to kill dust mites.
- Use allergen-impermeable encasings for bedding, including pillows, mattresses, duvet covers and box springs.
- Avoid foam rubber pillows and mattresses.
- Avoid upholstered furniture.
- Try leather, wood, plastic or vinyl.
- Remove carpeting if possible.
- Vacuum thoroughly using a HEPA filter vacuum and bags that seal in dust.
- Use window shades instead of heavy blinds or curtains.
- Maintain a replacement plan (at least quarterly) for your HVAC system’s air filters.
- Keep windows closed.
- Wipe down indoor surfaces frequently to remove animal hair and dander.
- Keep pets outdoors as much as possible, and at least out of the bedroom.
- Use a tight fitting mask when cleaning.
- Wash pets weekly with a dander-reducing shampoo, then follow with an anti-dander spray.
- Wash your hands after touching your pet.
- Clean all visible mold from walls and ceilings.
Note: These allergen irritant reduction tips are some, but certainly not all, the methods typically found in researching the topic of allergy control in the home. If you have any health care-related questions or concerns, please call or see your physician or other health care provider.
How noisy are Vornado Air Purifiers?
It is best described as a “fan” sound – always dependent on the setting and room size. Tests that compare noise level to performance level indicate Vornado units are among the industry’s best.
Can burning candles make my filter turn black?
Yes, even moderate use of candles in your home can cause the filter to turn black and, fairly quickly, clog the filter with soot particles. The good news is the filter is doing its job. The black soot accumulating on the filter was in your air.
How often should we run our unit?

The filter wicks on my humidifier are getting discolored, hard and crusty at the top. Is this normal?
Yes, it’s normal. As the filter wicks evaporate water, minerals and other impurities are left behind. Unfortunately, that mineral build-up also makes your wicks less efficient at evaporating water. If your filters still appear to be absorbing at least halfway up from the bottom, you can clean them. If they are no longer absorbing and there is no humidification action from your humidifier, it’s time to replace the wicks. Replacement wicks can be ordered from our website.
Can I clean the filter wick? If so, how?
Yes, you can clean the wick in an effort to extend their useful life or in an attempt to remove an odor. However, remember that the wick is a repository of impurities, many of which you will never fully remove. Having a disposable wick is a convenience because you can simply throw it away once it becomes encrusted. Think of it this way…would you rather throw away a disposable diaper or clean a cloth one? Additionally, cleaning the wick more than once or twice may end up destroying it as the cellulose will eventually break down. To clean the filter wicks place them in a pan or sink with just enough cool water to cover them. Mix in 2 teaspoons of white vinegar and allow the wick to soak, gently pressing the wick with your fingertips occasionally to help force the material out of the wick. After 20 to 30 minutes, remove the wick and rinse it under cool tap water — DO NOT WRING OR TWIST. Finally, replace the wick in the humidifier.
